It is definitely hard to assess…

Posted on December 20, 2007. Filed under: Teaching Problems |

It still remains a struggle to pre-assess and post-assess. My major focus now has been my failure to figure out what prior knowledge my students know about certain concepts. It is definitely like pulling teeth and is really tricky. You have to ask the right questions.

Is it me? Is it them? What is it?

Posted on December 14, 2007. Filed under: Teaching Problems |

Yesterday I was really stressed out for not being able to explain an assignment in a clear way to my students. The students were really rude and calling out at the same time, “What do we do again? Can you say that again? I don’t understand? I don’t understand? What are you talking about?”, that [...]

Apparently some think I’m racist.

Posted on December 14, 2007. Filed under: Parents |

I have just become aware that I have been creating a lot of drama since becoming a teacher. Who knew? Many of the parents are accusing me that I am racist and have it against their child. They don’t believe that it is perhaps their children who have it against MOI! <sigh>
The good thing [...]

At the end of each day, I must remember that I am not a failure.

Posted on December 13, 2007. Filed under: Uncategorized |

I made it through the highest drop out month–the month of November. I should give myself a pat on the back since I am still in the game. However, at times, it is just hard to keep on going if you don’t see any positive results.
These past three months have at times seemed like [...]

Engaging and Explicit

Posted on December 13, 2007. Filed under: Teaching Problems |

Those are the 2 E’s that I am struggling with. Although things are better, I am still not on top of classroom management. The kids are often not excited, not engaged, and often times confused, which I know inevitably leads to classroom disorder.
However, at times, I think to myself, “Wow, how do some [...]

Corruption

Posted on December 13, 2007. Filed under: Educational Politics |

It’s everywhere. It’s inevitable. Wherever there’s politics there’s corruption. You never can accuse the culprit because you know they are going to take you down with them.
I am just thankful that I do not work at a school that recognizes merit pay. I can’t imagine the uglier things I would see.

I have not failed…

Posted on December 12, 2007. Filed under: Advice |

I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.
This is the quote that I found to motivate myself. It’s a quote by Thomas Edison after he had successfully invented a working lightbulb after 10,000 tries. I have this quote hanging up at the end of my bed so everyday when I wake up, [...]

Good moment

Posted on December 12, 2007. Filed under: Uncategorized |

Since those 3 kiddies have been suspended…their class has been great!! There’s finally learning going on and class has positive energy again! I see smiles now! I see laughter and excitement for science. Although I have much work to do to keep this up, I thought I had to record this moment.
This week has been [...]

Another toughie

Posted on December 11, 2007. Filed under: Uncategorized |

I worked the suspension room today and experienced another tough situation. Two of the three kids I had gotten suspended were there and I lost face to a 4th grader. A fourth grader decided to pretend he was Chinese and started mocking me today. I felt like such a loser to this 4th grader. I [...]
